The short version: your sleep data stays with you, on your iPhone and Apple Watch and in your iPhone's own backups, and it never comes to us unless you send it. There are no analytics, no account to create, and no way for us to see how you sleep — everything BetterWake learns about your sleep is computed and stored on your own iPhone and Apple Watch.

Besides your iPhone's own backups, only two things ever leave your phone, and only when you choose to: a message you send us from the Feedback tab, and a night you share yourself with the Share night data button (that file goes wherever you send it, and we never see it unless you send it to us). Feedback messages are end to end encrypted and kept in BetterWake's own iCloud storage, so only your device and ours can read them — not Apple, and not anyone else. Your sleep data is never attached to them.

What BetterWake collects, and where it lives

What BetterWake never does

We never sell, rent, or share your data. We never receive your sleep data unless you choose to share a night with us yourself. BetterWake uses no third-party analytics or tracking SDKs, and there is no account to sign into, so we cannot tell who you are or how you sleep. Nothing you do in the app is used to track you across other apps or websites.

We receive only what you choose to send us: a message from the Feedback tab, an email, or a night you share yourself. Feedback messages are labelled with a random tag, not your name or email.

Messaging the developer

The Feedback tab lets you write directly to the person who built BetterWake. It sits idle until you use it.

When you send a message it is encrypted on your device before it leaves, and it is kept in BetterWake's own iCloud storage — not in your personal iCloud account — where it can only be opened by your device and the developer's. Nobody in between can read it, including Apple. Your conversation is tied to a random tag derived from your iCloud account, so we can reply to the right person without learning your name, email, or anything about how you sleep. Other people using BetterWake cannot read your messages, and you cannot read theirs.

Nothing you write is sent unless you tap send. If we have replied, opening the Feedback tab also stores a small read marker so we know the reply reached you, and your notify-me choice is saved so replies can reach your phone.

Messages are kept so we can answer you and understand the problem you reported.

Apple Health (HealthKit)

With your permission, BetterWake reads heart rate, heart-rate variability, and sleep analysis from Apple Health. It only reads: BetterWake never writes anything back, so the sleep stages it detects live in the app, never in Apple Health, and the workout session your watch runs overnight (that is what keeps its sensors on) is discarded every morning instead of saved. Health data is used solely to provide sleep tracking and the smart alarm. It is never used for advertising or marketing, and never disclosed to third parties. You can change or revoke Health access at any time in the Health app — without it, smart-wake tracking stops, but your alarm still rings at the time you set.

Purchases

Subscriptions and purchases are handled entirely by Apple. We never see your name, payment details, or Apple ID. From Apple's system the app reads your subscription status on this device — whether it is active, whether you are on a free trial, and when the current period ends — which is how it can remind you before a trial turns into a charge. All of that stays on your iPhone.

Between your iPhone and Apple Watch

Your sleep data moves between your own two devices over Apple's encrypted device-to-device channel (WatchConnectivity). That is the only place your sleep data travels on its own, apart from your iPhone's own backups: like other app data, your BetterWake nights and settings are included when your iPhone backs up to your iCloud account or to your computer. Those backups belong to you, and we cannot see them. Your sleep data reaches us only if you choose to share a night with us yourself.

This website

This website collects nothing. It has no forms, no accounts, no analytics, and no ad trackers. If you choose to email us, we use your email address for one purpose: replying to you. We never sell or share it.

Deleting your data

Deleting the app removes everything BetterWake stores on your iPhone — every night, every setting, every sound you imported. Nothing was ever written to Apple Health, so there is no second copy of your nights waiting there: deleting the app deletes them from your iPhone. Older copies can stay inside your iPhone's own backups (iCloud or your computer) until those backups are replaced or you delete them.

One thing does not go with the app: if you sent us messages from the Feedback tab, those are in BetterWake's iCloud storage rather than yours, so deleting the app does not remove them — and the key that unscrambles them stays in your iPhone's keychain, which iOS keeps even after an app is deleted, so reinstalling shows you the same conversation. To ask for it to be removed, email betterwakeapp@gmail.com.

Your rights

You can ask us what we hold about you by writing from the Feedback tab (so we know which conversation is yours) or emailing betterwakeapp@gmail.com. We never sell personal information.

Children

BetterWake is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. No sleep data reaches us on its own, and the only things we can receive are a message or a shared night someone chooses to send us.
